The week beginning November 9th thru the 15th saw the first Fagan Family trip that involved an actual flight. Dad had to go to Hong Kong for work, so Harley and I tagged along, and really enjoyed it! I’d have to say that without a doubt, the best thing about Hong Kong is its stellar transportation system, the MTR, which consists of a network of trains so smooth and organized that anyone can ride them and find their way around with serious ease! The second best feature would have to be the variety architecture and preservation of historical buildings… really great!
We arrived on a Sunday and, after dropping the bags off at the JW Marriot, we set out to explore a bit via the MTR… and eat at the Hard Rock CafĂ© in Kowloon. After that, we made our way over to the Avenue of the Stars to check out the Bruce Lee statue and Jackie Chan’s footprints!
Monday, Harley and I set out to explore the island of Hong Kong itself. Initially we went out in search of a coffee shop we had read about and to find a bookstore, but after we had fulfilled our quest the day turned into a day of great wandering that was really great. When Harley came back from work, he had dinner plans for us. He led us to a little “train” station where we boarded a little cable car of sorts. The trolley loaded up and we were off… up to the top of the mountain in Hong Kong, to a place known as “The Peak”. It was breathtaking! We ate an unforgettable dinner at a beautifully refurbished house called The Peak Lookout and just enjoyed each other’s company. What a way to spend an evening!
On Tuesday, Harley and I set out via the MTR to conquer Hong Kong Disneyland, which I have to say was more fun than I thought it would be. The weather was great and we spent about six hours there riding rides together, catching shows, and wandering about. After arriving back in Hong Kong, we did a little more exploring via the MTR and took a double-decker bus ride back to the hotel, which was another adventure entirely because the driver had a serious lead-foot… wheeee!
On Wednesday Harley come down with a minor head cold, so he worked on his homework while I went out and hunted down some cold remedy type stuff at Watson’s (like Walgreen’s.)
Thursday brought more rides on the MTR, and Harley and I set out to take on Kowloon on our own. Some friends of ours had visited the area a couple of weeks prior and had told us about a Star Wars shop that we just had to find. Sadly however, and after about 3 hours of searching, we came up empty. Determined to not leave empty handed, we bought Harley a new pair of wicked kicks from a little shop, and paid something like $20 USD for… sweet!
Friday was another “down day” that Harley and I took advantage of for our collective homework purposes. After he finished his, we headed down to the pool area where Harley swam for a good long time whilst I read my book. LOVELY!
Before catching our 6pm flight back to Chengdu on Saturday, we all headed out to The Gate shopping center to take full advantage of the global, financial meltdown sales as Harley is always in desperate need of clothes that fit him! I’m not really much of a shopper, but it was a pretty cool place and we were able to get some really great deals.
When we arrived back in Chengdu, there was a Birthday party going on for our friend, Kim Dallas, so we headed out to wish her well and spend some time with friends.
All in all, Hong Kong provided a fabulous adventure and we will look forward to going back anytime the situation arises!
Cheers to all,
Lisa
